Thoughts on Dweck’s Growth Mindset

Thoughts on Dweck’s Growth Mindset

Carol Dweck’s TED Talk The Power of Yet had a very interesting take on how our mindsets affect how we perform. During her TED Talk, she introduces a concept she calls a “growth mindset”; according to Dweck, this is where one is able to recognize “that their abilities could be developed.” On the flip side, she introduces a fixed mindset, or a mindset where one is stuck in the thoughts that they will never improve their abilities and that talent sonly natural born instead of being able to adapt and improve upon it. These mindsets made me think about my own life, “Where have I used both of these mindsets and why?”  I realized that, such as Dweck pointed out in The Power of Yet, I used my fixed mindset a lot when it came to test taking or coming to terms that I will never be the best at something. Carol Dweck asked how are we raising our children, “Are we raising them for now instead of yet?” Again, making me think about how I have been raised. This TED Talk has made me reminisce a lot about my own life, which I feel is very important in a Talk such as this. You want the listener to ponder, to apply the Talk to their own life. Overall, I feel as though Carol Dweck did a wonderful job conveying the importance of “Not Yet”, teaching the listener that just because you have not reached where you want to be with a certain discipline or activity, doesn’t mean you will never get there, it just means that you have not gotten there yet.
